The following drink and cocktail recipes are favorites that have withstood the test of time. To make a truly professional tasting and looking cocktail you must start with the right ingredients and accessories. Whiskey
Whiskey Recipes
Old Fashioned
2 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 tsp simple syrup, 2 oz your favorite Rye, Bourbon, or Whiskey, 2-3 ice cubes, orange peel to garnish. Combine first 4 ingredients, stirring thoroughly. Squeeze orange peel to release orange zest oil and drop into drink.
Whiskey Sour
2 oz Rye, 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 tsp simple syrup, 1 egg white. Shake all ingredients vigorously, which will froth the egg white. Pour into your favorite glass.
Manhattan
2 oz Rye Whiskey, 1 oz dry vermouth, 1 dash Angostura bitters, 1 dash simple syrup lemon peel. Zest lemon peel over rim of glass.
Mint Julep
3 sprigs of fresh mint, 3 tbsp simple syrup, 2oz Bourbon Whiskey, crushed ice. Muddle the 1 sprig mint along with the Bourbon and simple syrup. Strain into glass, add crushed ice and garnish with mint.
Rusty Nail
2 ounces blended Scotch, 1/2 ounce Drambuie, 1 dash of Angostura bitters (optional). Fill a rocks glass with ice, add Scotch, Drambuie, and bitters (if using). Stir thoroughly and serve.
Kentucky Buck
2 oz. of your favorite Bourbon, .75 oz. lemon juice, .75 oz. simple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 strawberry, sliced, Ginger beer. Muddle the lemon juice, simple syrup, and strawberry in a cocktail shaker. Next, add the Bourbon, bitters, and ice, and shake. Strain into an ice-filled glass and then top with ginger beer and garnish with a strawberry(if desired).
Brown Derby
2 oz. Bourbon, 1 oz. grapefruit juice, .5 oz. honey syrup (equal parts honey and water). Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a grapefruit wedge or twist.
Millionaire
2 oz. Bourbon, .5 oz. orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier or Cointreau), .5 oz. fresh lemon juice, .25 oz. grenadine, 1 tsp. absinthe. Do an absinthe rinse of a chilled glass, then add the rest of the ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake. Lastly, strain into a chilled glass.
Scofflaw
2 oz. Bourbon, 1 oz. dry vermouth, .5 oz. grenadine, .25 oz. lemon juice, 2 dashes of orange bitters. Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake, straining it into a chilled cocktail glass and garnishing with a lemon twist.
Bourbon Cider
2.5 oz. hard cider, 1 oz. Bourbon, 2 tsp. honey, Nutmeg to taste, Apple slices for garnish. First warm the cider, honey, and a couple apple slices in a small saucepan. Once warm, pour it into a mug (or glassware that can handle the heat) and add Bourbon, your favorite fall spice (like nutmeg, cinnamon, cinnamon sticks, clove, anise, etc.), and garnish with an apple slice. You could just as easily pour over ice for a more refreshing take on bourbon cider.
Milk Punch
One of the oldest cocktail recipes, the milk punch is believed to date back centuries, typically consisting of some combination of whiskey, brandy, rum, milk, and spices. Simply combine your choice of the ingredients (except nutmeg) in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake. Strain into a rocks glass and top with nutmeg.
The Revolver
2 ounces Bourbon (a rye-heavy bourbon such as Bulleit, Buffalo Trace or Basil Hayden is recommended) 1/2 ounce coffee liqueur, 2 dashes orange bitters, Garnish: wide strip of orange zest. Combine bourbon, coffee liqueur, and orange bitters in a mixing glass and fill with ice. Stir well until chilled, about 30 seconds. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Twist orange peel to express oils over drink and use as garnish (or, for a better floor show and a deeper flavor, flame the orange twist and then use the twist as garnish.)
Vodka
Vodka Recipes
Black Russian
2 oz. Vodka, 1 oz. Kahlua. Pour ingredients over a rocks glass filled with crushed or cube ice. Stir gently.
Bloody Mary
1-1/2 oz. Vodka, 1/4 oz. Lemon Juice, 2 drops Worchestershire, 2 drops of Tabasco, Tomato Juice, Celery Salt, Salt and Pepper to taste, Celery Stalk or Pickle Wedge. Combine ingredients in a collins glass or bucket filled with ice. Stir well. Garnish with celery stalk or pickle wedge.
Blue Hawaii
1-1/2 oz. Vodka, 1/2 oz. Blue Curacao, 1/4 oz. Creme of Coconut, 4 oz. Pineapple Juice. Combine ingredients in a shaker glass with ice. Shake well, then strain into collins glass filled with crushed ice. Can also be blended.
Brass Monkey
1 oz. Vodka, 1/2 oz. Light Rum, 1/2 oz. Galliano, 4 oz. Orange Juice. Combine ingredients in an old fashioned glass (small bucket glass) filled with ice. Stir well. Float Galliano on top by pouring over back of spoon.
Cape Codder
1-1/2 oz. Vodka, 3 oz. Cranberry Juice. Pour ingredients into ice-filled highball glass. Stir.
Cement Mixer
Splash of Vodka, 3/4 oz. Irish Cream, 1/4 oz. Lime Juice. Combine ingredients into rocks glass filled with ice. Stir until thick. Drink immediately!
Chi Chi
1-1/2 oz. Vodka, 2 oz. Pineapple Juice, 1 oz. Creme of Coconut, 1/2 Banana (sliced), Pineapple Wedge, 3/4 cup of crushed ice. Combine ingredients in blender. Blend for 15 to 25 seconds. Pour mixture into collins glass. Garnish with pineapple wedge.
Cool Aid
3/4 oz. Vodka or Southern Comfort, 3/4 oz. Amaretto, 1 oz. Cranberry Juice. Fill shaker glass with ice. Add ingredients. Shake well and strain into shot glass.
Cream Sickle
2-1/2 oz. Orange Vodka or Orange Juice, 1/2 oz. Grand Marnier, 1-1/2 oz. Irish Cream, 1 oz. Godiva White, Orange Slice. Combine ingredients in ice-filled rocks glass. Stir. Garnish with orange slice.
Greyhound
1 oz. Vodka, Grapefruit Juice. Combine ingredients in an ice-filled collins glass. Stir.
Harvey Wallbanger
1 oz. Vodka, 1/2 oz. Galliano, 4-6 oz. Orange Juice. Combine ingredients in an ice-filled collins glass. Stir. Float Galliano on top by pouring over back of spoon.
Jello Shots
4 oz. Vodka, 8 oz. Jello Box, 1 Cup of Boiling Water, 1 Cup of Cold Water. Add 1 cup of boiling water to Jellow packet. Stir, then add 1 cup of cold water. Add vodka and pour into shot cups. Refrigerate.
Kamikaze
1-1/2 oz. Vodka, 1/4 oz. Triple Sec, 1/4 oz. Lime Juice. Combine ingredients into ice-filled shaker glass. Shake well and strain into shot glass.
Melon Ball
1 oz. Vodka, 1 oz. Midori, Orange Juice, Cherry. Pour vodka into ice-filled collins glass. Add orange juice to almost the top of glass. Float Midori. Stir gently. Garnish with cherry.
Vodka Martini
3 ounces good-quality vodka, splash or 1/2 ounce dry vermouth, Ice Cubes, Pimento-stuffed green olives, lemon twist. Chill martini glasses by placing in the freezer. Place 7 to 8 ice cubes in a chilled glass pitcher or metal cocktail shaker. Note: Your glass pitcher or metal shaker should also be stored in the freezer. Pour vodka and vermouth into the chilled glass pitcher or a metal cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes. Either shake or stir until cold (your choice) at least 10 seconds. Strain into a chilled martini cocktail glass. Serve straight up (no ice in the glass). Garnish with either a 2-3 large olives or a lemon twist. Makes 1 fantastic classic martini!
Moscow Mule
2 oz. Vodka, 1 tsp. Lime Juice, Ginger Beer, Lime Wedge. Add vodka and lime juice to an ice-filled 10 oz. chilled beer mug or 'mule mug'. Fill with ginger beer. Garnish with lime wedge.
Gin
Gin Recipes
Bermuda Coctail
1 oz. Brandy, 1 oz. Gin, 1 oz. Dry Vermouth. Pour brandy, gin and vermouth into ice-filled highball glass. Then fill with club soda or ginger ale. Stir
Delmonico Cocktail
1 oz. Gin, 1/2 oz. Brandy, 1/2 oz. Sweet Vermouth, 1/2 oz. Dry Vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura Bitters, 1 Lemon twist. Fill mixing glass with ice, add gin, brandy, vermouths and bitters. Stir, then strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with lemon twist.
Dubonnet Coctail
1-1/2 oz. Gin, 1-1/2 oz. Dubonnet, Lemon Twist. Add ice to mixing glass, then add gin and Dubonnet. Stir and strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with lemon twist.
Gibson
2 oz. Gin or Vodka, 2 drops Dry Vermouth, 1 Pearl Onion. Combine gin or vodka and vermouth into coctail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into chilled martini glass, garnish with pearl onion.
Gimlet
2 oz. Gin, 1/2 oz. Lime Juice. Combine ingredients into shaker glass with ice. Shake well and strain into chilled martini glass.
Gin and Tonic
1-1/2 oz. Gin, Tonic Water, Lime Wedge. Combine ingredients into bucket or highball glass. Stir and add squeezed lime wedge.
Gin Cocktail
2 oz. Gin, 2 dashes Orange Bitters, Lemon Twist. Add ingredients to shaker glass filled with ice. Stir, then strain into chilled martini glass, garnish with lemon twist.
Long Island Ice Tea
1/2 oz. Gin, 1/2 oz. Vodka, 1/2 oz. Rum, 1/2 oz. Tequila (optional), 1/2 oz. Triple Sec, 1 oz. Sweet and Sour. Pour ingredients into ice-filled highball glass. Top with Cola, stir and garnish with lemon twist.
Pink Lady
1-1/2 oz. Gin, 3/4 oz. Lime Juice, Dash Grenadine, Dash Sweet Cream, Dash of Lemon Juice. Add ingredients to shaker glass. Shake well, then strain into pre-chilled cocktail glass filled with crushed ice.
Gin Ricky
1-1/2 oz. Gin, 1-1/4 oz. Lime Juice, Club Soda. Add ingredients to ice-filled Collins glass. Fill with club soda and stir.
Gin Martini
3 oz. Gin, 2 drops of Dry Vermouth (more drops for drier martini). Combine ingredients into ice-filled shaker glass. Shake, then strain into chilled martini glass.
Salty Dog
1-1/2 oz. Gin or Vodka, 3 oz. Grapefruit Juice. Combine ingredients into shaker glass. Shake and strain into an ice-filled highball glass with salted rim.
Snowball
1-1/2 oz. Gin, 1/2 oz. Anise Liqueur, 1/2 oz. Cream. Pour ingredients into shaker glass. Shake, then strain into chilled martini glass.
Tom Collins
1 oz. Gin, Sweet and Sour, Soda Water. Pour gin into ice-filled highball glass. Add equal parts of sweet and sour and soda (3 oz. each). Stir.
